Tondos are a series of unique color woodcuts on handmade Japanese Igarashi Kozo circular paper. "Tondo", a renaissance term for a circular work of art, derives from the Italian rotondo "round" The term usually refers to round artworks larger than two feet in diameter. The Tondo series, are 37" in diameter, providing a dynamic format for geometric composition. Minimalistic solid fields of color, transparency overlays, interplay, and are uniquely enhanced by the extraordinary beauty of Japanese handmade paper. Inside the circular paper, mosaic improvisations of colorful rectangular and square intricately carved woodblocks, play against the negative space of blind printings. "Blind printing" meaning un-inked blocks, which show embossed carved textures and patterns.
