oculus

monotypes, woodcuts, silkscreens

Oculus are a series are mixed media impressions composed of monotype, woodcut and silkscreen, on Japanese Kozo handmade circular paper. "Oculus" from Latin meaning "eye", or an eye-like opening in a design, such as a circular window or an opening at the apex of a dome, is inspiration for this series. Each print is made with a monotype base of concentric solid colored circles, upon which woodcut and screenprint patterns are overprinted. Combining solid color with intricate patterns creates beautiful labyrinths, referencing the ideal of unity, wholeness and enlightenment. The circle is the earth, it represents the world. These "Oculus" circular prints, or "eyes", resists distraction of vision, acting as a focal point towards which the viewer's attention is continuously attracted, meditatively open, to see the world.
